Suction Catheters: The Ultimate Guide

Suction catheters have tremendously transformed the medical sector and have made it easy to meet patients’ needs.

In this guide, we shall learn most if not all the information you need to know about suction catheters.

Keep reading.

1.  What Is The Purpose Of A Suction Catheter?

A suction catheter is used for clearing substances or obstructions from the body by means of sucking them out.

Suction catheters have several applications in the medical industry some of which include in the dental, respiratory, and digestive systems.

In the dental system, it is used to inhibit aspiration in patients seeking dental treatment.

On the other hand, suction catheters help to clear mucus from the tracheostomy tube to aid in proper breathing.

Also, suction catheters are used to withdraw tissue, fluids, and other substances from the digestive tract.

So really, it is an equipment that is largely applicable in several circumstances in the medical field. This in turn raises questions about its uses.

2.  Uses Of Suction Catheters

Mostly, suction catheters come in handy when unblocking solid, liquid, or semi-solid materials from the trachea, pharynx, and dental system.

Depending on the condition of the patient, different suction devices might be needed to perform the task.

Suction catheters can be used in three of the following scenarios;

  • In-Hospital – Most if not all hospitals have some rooms fitted with wall-mounted suction catheters.

Such suction devices are often stationary and are used for different procedures.

Such as tonsillectomies, tracheostomies, and sinus-related conditions just to mention some.

However, you need to know that there are also portable devices that are used for special cases.

For instance, if a patient requires an aspirator but it’s lacking in their room, a portable aspirator will be brought to him/her.

This will prevent moving the patient to a different room. In addition to that, this also comes into use when a hospital is at full capacity.

  • Ongoing Patient Care – Portable suction catheters are used at home by patients to clear their secretions from the body.

This is mostly used by patients who are unable to clear their own secretions owing to different conditions such as chronic diseases.

  • Pre-Hospital – Suction catheters are also used in a pre-hospital setting to determine ABC (air, breathing, and circulation).

While at it, they are also used to treat patients suffering from trauma with blood in the airway, overdose with blood in the airway.

Also, other respiratory emergency cases.

3.      Types Of Suction Catheters And Their Application

As I mentioned before, different conditions might require different types of suction catheters.

Here are some of the different types of suction catheters;

1. Yankauer catheter which is used for oral suction procedures. They do not damage any surrounding tissues.

2. Tip catheters for nasal and oral suction procedures.

3. Little suckers which are also used for oral and nasal suctioning.

4. A longer suction catheter which is applicable during oropharyngeal, nasal, and nasopharyngeal suctioning.

5. Closed system catheters – A closed system catheter is often enclosed in its own collection bag and is joined to the catheter.

Closed system catheters are often suitable for patients with Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) or those who are immunosuppressed.

Closed system suction catheters are multi-use and need to be changed every 24-48hours.

They are the most preferred type of catheter system since they reduce the risk of infections.

6. Open system catheters – Open system catheters have an open end on one side of the catheter.

This facilitates drainage to a toilet. In addition to that, the open end can be attached to a bag to collect urine.

Open system suction catheters are single-use and are known to have a higher risk of causing infections and pneumonia.

4.  Which Components Make A Suction Machine?

A suction machine is made up of several small parts which include;

  • Filters
  • Disposable canister
  • Suction pump
  • Disposable or rechargeable batteries
  • Power cord
  • Sterile patient tubing
  • Connection tubing

5.  How Do You Set Up A Suction Catheter?

A suction catheter is one of the components needed for a suction machine to effectively perform its function.

Before beginning the set-up process for a suction machine, it’s important that you have proper training and read the product’s manual.

Some of the critical items needed are not limited to;

  • A suction catheter
  • A canister
  • Power supply
  • Spill control solidifiers
  • Patient tubing
  • Aspirator-to-canister connective tubing

Before starting the set-up process, be sure to inspect the outer parts and confirm that they lack any defects or damages.

If everything is in order, connect the aspirator to the source of power.

If the power source is lacking it’s important to ensure that the suction machine is fully charged.

Thereafter, fix the tubing and collection canister onto the machine.

First, secure the lid on the collection canister then connect the pour spout cap on the lid’s pour spout.

Make sure that the collection cap is well fixed to a basket and as soon as you’re done setting up the container, join the connection hose to the aspirator’s vacuum port.

At the same time, connect the vacuum port to the collection canister.

The sterile tubing should be connected to the canister’s patient port.

Once the aspirator turns on, the suction machine will start a self-check to confirm that all internal systems are functioning as desired.

Remember, as you do this you need to ensure that you’re keenly following the guidelines in the manual.

Check if the machine is receiving the appropriate kind of power and once it’s on, conduct an operation test to confirm that it is functioning correctly.

6.  Factors Affecting Cost Of Suction Catheters.

The cost of suction catheters varies depending on several factors including;

  • MOQ – The higher the MOQ the lower the price and vice versa.

This mostly applies when purchasing your suction catheters in bulk from a manufacturer.

However, it’s difficult to negotiate the MOQ, and most of the time the manufacturer will expect nothing that could affect profits.

That said, it’s important to ensure that your proposal is well figured out.

  • Usage – Some suction catheters such as the closed suction catheters are multi-use and can be changed after every 24 to 48 hours.

This makes them more costly as compared to other types of single-use suction catheters such as open suction catheters.

  • Type – Different types of suction catheters have different costs.

Depending on the use of the device, the cost will vary from tens of dollars to several hundreds of dollars.

  • Quality – As with any type of device, you expect to find some that are of higher quality than others.

-quality suction catheters cost more as compared to regular or low-quality ones.

  • Size – Bigger suction catheters cost more compared to smaller ones.
  • Customization – Some buyers especially large-scale buyers might need their logo printed on the suction catheters.

Customization of any kind is more than likely to raise the general price of the devices.

7.  What Are The Factors To Consider When Buying Suction Catheters?

There are certain factors that you might want to consider before purchasing suction catheters.

To begin with, it’s important to know that a suitable catheter should optimize the removal of secretions and reduce tissue trauma.

With that in mind, here are some factors you should consider when buying suction catheters;

  • Frictional resistance
  • Shape -Some catheters such as hyper curved catheters are shaped like a patient’s airway thus facilitating efficient suction.
  • Position of the aspirating holes- Aspirating holes refer to the openings located at the proximal end of the catheter.

This hole should exceed the size of the catheter lumen.

  • Material of construction – Most suction catheters are either made of PVC or plastic.
  • Size (Diameter and Length) – The length of the suction catheter needs to pass past the distal tip of the artificial airway.

The diameter should not be more than one-half of the internal diameter of the artificial airway.

A suction catheter should neither be too large nor too small as this might compromise the removal of secretions.

Also, the size used by adults and pediatric patients differs.

For example, 7.0 0r 8.0 tubes would be ideal for most adults.

On the other hand, pediatric patients would need smaller tubes to prevent them from choking.

8.  Can You Reuse Suction Catheters?

Yes, you can reuse a suction catheter. However, this is what you need to know concerning the same.

It is recommended that you change your suction catheter after every 24 hours to avoid complications that result from using it for too long.

Keep in mind that you need to clean the suction catheter specifically as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Regardless of whether or not they appear clean, suction catheters need to be sanitized after each use.

Generally, reusing suction catheters has been considered a safe and cost-effective practice.

While at it, be cautious of suction catheters that become cloudy, are stained, or have cracks as this indicates that they need to be disposed of.

9.  What Are The Available Sizes Of Suction Catheters?

Suction catheters come in different sizes to serve different patients and conditions. Oftentimes, adults will need a bigger size as compared to pediatric patients.

This is crucial in ensuring that children avoid getting choked.

A suction catheter should neither be too large nor too small.

16 and 18 French are the average suction catheter size used for adults which are equivalent to 5.3mm or 0.210” and 6mm or 0.236” respectively.

As a rule of thumb, it’s recommended to use a suction catheter with an external diameter that’s below 50% the size of the ETT inner diameter.

Here are some of the available sizes of suction catheters;

10.  How To Determine The Size Of Suction Catheters To Use.

The size of suction catheters to use will vary depending on the type of patient and condition. The sizes of suction catheters vary in terms of length and internal diameters of the airway.

Adult patients normally require a bigger catheter as compared to pediatric patients. Generally, the size of your suction catheters needs to have external diameters that don’t exceed 50% of the size inner diameter of the ETT.

This prevents any suction-related complications.

Here is a formula that you could use to determine the size of suction catheters for tracheal suctioning;

Suction catheter size (French)= 2x(size of tracheostomy tube -2).

11.  Which Are The Most Innovative Suction Catheters?

Through the years, suction catheters have come a long way and currently, there are some innovative types of suction catheters which include;

  • Hypercurved Catheter – Has a unique design to facilitate extended reach in problematic airways.

Hypercurved catheters are ideal for patients with full arrest and would also be functional for those with a short neck or displaced trachea.

  • Oropharyngeal Evacuation Tool – Sometimes, the substances being suctioned might be large and impossible to pass through the catheter regardless of the lumen’s size. This type of catheter facilitates suctioning the chunkiest secretions.

Even though there are rare cases of patients requiring this tool, having it keeps you ready for any challenging conditions that might arise.

  • Large Diameter with Precision Tip – This type of catheter is suitable for most emergency situations.

The precision tip has eyeholes which offer relief in situations where the tip is positioned directly against the mucosa.

It should also have a large interior bore to prevent clogs.

12.  How Often Should Suction Catheters Be Changed?

It is recommended that you change suction catheters after every 24 hours.

This is to prevent the formation of biofilm which can potentially cause bacteria and infection.

13.  How Do You Clean A Suction Catheter?

To clean suction catheters, you first need to have and gather the necessary items or supplies which include;

  • Suction machine
  • 3 large bowls
  • Dry towels
  • 1 Bottle of sterile water
  • 1 pair of clean gloves
  • Dry container to store catheter
  • 1 bottle of dishwashing detergent
  • Dirty catheters
  • 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide

Cleaning Process

  1. Take 1/3 full tap water with 1 squeeze of dishwashing soap and fill it in the 1st bowl.
  2. Fill ¼ full of hydrogen peroxide in the 2nd bowl.
  3. Fill ¼ full of sterile water in the 3rd bowl.
  4. To clean the interior, suction soapy water through the catheter or dip the catheter in and out of the water for thorough cleaning.
  5. Rinse the catheter and wipe off any debris.
  6. To rinse off soapy water from the catheter, you need to suction clean water through it as you did with soapy water.
  7. Afterward, suction a little hydrogen peroxide through the catheter and later soak it inside the hydrogen peroxide for 20minutes.
  8. To rinse off the hydrogen peroxide, suction sterile water through the catheter and soak it in the sterile water to rinse the exterior of the catheter.
  9. The last step is drying the suction catheter.

Here, you need to suction air through the catheter to dry the inside.

Use a dry towel to wipe the exterior of the suction catheter and store the catheter in a clean dry container.

14.  How Do Suction Catheters Work?

Suction catheters work by pulling or sucking out secretions from the body.

Suction pressure exerted within the catheter facilitates the suctioning process.

15.  How Do Manual, Stationary, And Portable Suction Machines Differentiate?

Manual suction machines have a simple design and don’t require a power supply.

Their small size, portability, and ability to function without electricity features make them ideal for use during emergencies.

manual suction machine

 It’s however difficult to use these devices consistently and effectively for longer periods.

Stationary suction machines have been the most common through the years.

This is not only because of their effectiveness but also reliability and consistency.

As compared to manual suction machines, stationary suction machines lack portability features.

This only limits it for use in a hospital setting.

16.  Which Materials Are Used For Suction Catheters?

Plastic and PVC are the two materials that are commonly used for suction catheters.

17.  Disposable Suction Catheters Vs Multi-Use Suction Catheters.

Both disposable and multi-use suction catheters should be present as they perform different functions.

Disposable catheters are recommended by most medical professionals for health reasons. As the name suggests, once they are used, they are disposed of.

disposable suction catheter

This minimizes the occurrence of any infection.

Multi-use suction catheters are used and cleaned severally before they are disposed of.

That said, they are more than likely to cause infections if not carefully maintained.

Multi-use catheters have a coating and thus they need a lubricant to function efficiently.

18.  Best Practices For Suction Catheters

Here are some of the best practices to follow when using suction catheters;

  • Practice Good Sanitation
  • Clean and store reusable devices
  • Have the right sizes available
